Content and music

The song is about trust and Clapton's life after leaving the band Cream . Clapton was having a happy period in life at the time and was delighted to perform with Blind Faith. In Presence of the Lord , Clapton deals with the subject of spirituality for the first time in a song. According to his own statement, the core message of the text is "Thank God (or whatever you call him) for whatever happens." Allmusic critic Bill Janovitz thinks that Clapton has found a little peace at least briefly and in the song. Steve Winwood sang on the piece because, according to Clapton, he hit the high notes better.
