Fontanès is a French municipality with 678 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and is part of the canton of Sorbiers (until 2015: canton of Saint-Héand ). The inhabitants are called Fontaniards (or Fontaniods ).

Fontanès is located about ten kilometers north-northeast of the city center of Saint-Étienne . Fontanès is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chevrières in the north and north-west, Grammond in the north and north-east, Saint-Christo-en-Jarez in the east, Sorbiers in the south, Saint-Héand in the west and south-west and La Gimond in the west and north-west.
