The Parkhotel Adler is a historical hotel on the edge of the climatic health resort Hinterzarten .

Since the acquisition of the property by Hans Bilstein in 1446, it has been used by one and the same family as an inn - first as a manor of 80 hectares with room rental, later a tavern was added. When the post office was founded in 1490, the estate became a post office . In the 19th century, the hotel business developed into a grand hotel .

Since 2011 the hotel has been a member of the " Small Luxury Hotels of the World ". There are several buildings from different eras on the hotel grounds, one of which is a listed building. The original Black Forest house , which is also the oldest building on the site, dates from 1639, and a second building was built in 1890 during the Belle Époque . The remaining buildings were built in the 20th century.

The family business

In the 1990s, the hotel had problems with occupancy. In 1996, Klaus Trescher and his wife Gabriele bought the company within the family. In 2000 her daughter Katja Newman (nee Trescher) took over the management in the 16th generation. She carried out structural and structural changes so that the hotel was economically viable again. For this, Katja Newman was named "Hotelier of the Year" by Deutsche Fachverlag in 2004. From 1999 to 2015, the hotelier family invested around eleven million euros to maintain the hotel. For the years 2019 and 2020, around four million euros will be added for further renovations. On November 13, 2019, Katja Newman was awarded the Business Medal by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics, Labor and Housing for her commitment. excellent.

Property and private park

Public walking paths run through the 70,000 square meter property with a small lake. The western area is reserved for hotel guests. The park has various water points, including a natural stream and a duck pond, as well as benches, sculptures and historical fountains. Albino deer live in the game reserve . The enclosure was laid out by Oskar Riesterer. The Adler ski stadium with four jumps is located behind the hotel area . The sports area used to belong to the Parkhotel Adler property - Alfred Riesterer, Katja Newman's great-grandfather, donated it to the community.

history

From the foundation to the end of the 18th century

The original building burned down almost completely in the Thirty Years War . The wooden facade of the Black Forest house, which was then rebuilt in 1639, was able to remain in its original form with the exception of a few necessary renovations, as well as part of the interior and the wall cladding. At the front entrance you can still see the old tavern sign with the Austrian eagle in the coat of arms (until 1803 the region was part of Habsburg Front Austria ). Today the Black Forest house is a listed building.

The building, which looks typical of historic Black Forest country houses, is now home to the restaurants, the hotel kitchen, the bar, the "French Hall" event room and some accommodations - the low ceilings are still there in many of the rooms. The wall paneling, the built-in furniture such as the wall cupboard and shelves in the “Stube” seating area of the “Adler Stuben” restaurant, which opened in 2018, date from the construction period around 1639. The tiled stove and other furnishings were added later. On one side of the wall is the portrait of Katharina Riesterer, Adler landlady from 1632 to 1680, and her husband Franz Gustav, Adler landlord from 1622 to 1681. The forgotten painting was rediscovered a few years ago when moving a large farmer's cupboard. Parts of the walls of the “French Hall” event room were clad with fabric wallpapers from the Swiss antiques trade “Charles-Emile Moinat & Fils SA” based on historical models in the 20th century. The same applies to the breakfast pavilion, an extension of the Black Forest house. It is also furnished with chairs and tables in the neo-renaissance style. The ceilings are painted using the trompe-l'oeil technique.

19th century

The historic Black Forest house and the main building around 1920

With the construction of today's main building in 1890, the business became a grand hotel . The entrance lined with columns, the windows and their shutters as well as the interior bear witness to the era of the year of construction: the elegant style of the Belle Époque is continued inside. Many of the antiques, chandeliers and stucco are still part of the interior design even after the rooms were renovated in 2011.

20th and 21st centuries

At the end of the First World War , the hotel served as a children's home. In the Second World War, a military hospital was set up here. Until the roof of the Black Forest house was completely re-covered in 2017, there was still a red cross to be seen.

In 1978 the hotelier family added the residence to the main building. The units that were there were converted into luxury condominiums when the hotel was renovated in 2011. In 1999, Klaus Trescher had a wellness pavilion built in the private park according to the plans of the Konstanz architecture firm Finthammer. The all-round glazed building in the form of a snail was designed based on Far Eastern models. In 2013 the outdoor area was expanded to include an outdoor pool with a deck.

The coffee house operation in the Art Nouveau glass pavilion built in 2006 on the small Adlersee was closed on November 4, 2019. From the end of 2019 the "Pavillon Diva" will serve as a new conference and event location for artists.

In all rooms of the Parkhotel Adler there are many historical furnishing elements from historicism and art nouveau. New furnishing details are adapted accordingly.

On May 11, 2018, the Parkhotel Adler opened its new restaurant "Adler Stuben" in the Black Forest House, but left the historic wood paneling on the walls and ceilings. This was the first time since the 1960s that the gastronomic rooms were completely renewed. The second new restaurant was added on August 1, 2018 - the tiles on the fireplace from 1860 in the fine-dining restaurant “Oscars” show regional motifs such as deer, shepherds, wild boars and herons from the region. The builder came from Schluchsee.

In 1814 Marie Louise of Austria , Empress of France, stayed here on the way to Vienna, where she returned after the abdication of her husband Napoleon Bonaparte . For her trip she used the Höllentalstraße , which was built in 1770 for her relative Marie Antoinette , who would later become Queen of France.

The hotel was visited by prominent overnight guests such as Udo Lindenberg , Joe Cocker , Tina Turner , Herbert Grönemeyer and Johannes Rau . The Dutch national team Oranjes used the Parkhotel Adler as their team quarters during the 2006 World Cup . When filming the series “ The Black Forest Clinic ”, the hotel served as a backdrop for some scenes.
