Rive-de-Gier (pronounced rihw dö schjeh ) is a French town in the district of Saint-Etienne in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located on the river Gier and on the Saint-Étienne - Lyon railway .

Rive-de-Gier has 15,184 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017); this means that the population has fallen back to roughly the level at the end of the 19th century. Economically, Rive-de-Gier was shaped by coal mining , ironworks and glassworks .

Since greed is not navigable, the Givors Canal was built between 1760 and 1780 to transport the coal . This was of great importance at times and was extended to La Grand-Croix in the 1840s . From the 1830s he lost market share on the Saint-Étienne – Lyon railway ; In 1886 the state bought the bankrupt sewer company. Today, greed is largely covered in the urban area, so that the river cannot be seen in the city center.

The municipality is located on the edge of the Pilat Regional Nature Park and is associated with it as an access point.

The city's most famous son is the entomologist Hugues-Fleury Donzel .
