Chavanay is a French commune with 2,885 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and is part of the canton of Le Pilat . The inhabitants are called Chavanois (es) .

geography

Chavanay is about 50 kilometers south of Lyon on the Rhône . Chavanay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône in the north, Saint-Clair-du-Rhône in the northeast, Saint-Alban-du-Rhône in the east, Saint-Maurice-l'Exil in the southeast, Saint-Pierre- de-Bœuf in the south, Malleval in the south, Bessey in the south and south-west, Jonzieux in the south-west, Pélussin in the west and Chuyer in the north-west.

Chavanay is located in the Pilat Regional Nature Park and in the Côtes du Rhône wine-growing region , where the grapes for Saint Joseph wine are grown here. Chavanay is located on a variant of the Camino de Santiago , namely the Via Gebennensis coming from Geneva .

history

On December 3, 1990, a railway accident occurred here when wagons carrying chemicals derailed and then exploded.
