La Ricamarie is a French commune in the canton of Le Chambon-Feugerolles in Arrondissement of Saint-Étienne in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The 7906 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) of the city call themselves Ricamandoises .

geography

The municipality is located about 55 kilometers southwest of Lyon in the Massif Central on the Ondaine River , a small tributary of the Upper Loire . The municipality is located on the edge of the Pilat Regional Nature Park and is associated with it as an access point.

history

There may have been an ancient oppidum in what is now the municipality . Archaeological investigations have produced remains that could be assigned to a settlement.

Until the 15th century the name of the place was Tiregarne , then La Rycamarie or today's La Ricamarie prevailed (as a "rich mine" it indicated the abundant coal mines here). In 1843 the place was detached from the current neighboring municipality of Le Chambon-Feugerolles and became an independent municipality.
