Farnay is a French commune with 1,408 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and the canton of Rive-de-Gier (until 2015: canton of La Grand-Croix ). The inhabitants are called Cellieutaires .

geography

Farnay is located about 19 kilometers east-northeast of Saint-Étienne . Farnay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Lorette in the north, Rive-de-Gier and Châteauneuf in the northeast, Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez in the east and southeast and Saint-Paul-en-Jarez in the south and west.
