Saint-Martin-la-Plaine is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chabanière with Saint-Didier-sous-Riverie in the north, Saint-Joseph in the east, Rive-de-Gier in the south, Genilac in the west and Saint-Romain-en-Jarez in the Northwest. The municipality is drained by the Ruisseau de Baulieu brook to the Féloin , which tends towards greed on the western and southern municipal boundaries . The Vaille brook runs along the eastern municipal boundary .
