The greed is a river in the French region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It rises on Mont Pilat , in the middle of the Pilat Regional Nature Park , in the municipality of La Valla-en-Gier . Its source is located on the north flank of the Crêt de la Perdrix , at an altitude of around 1335 meters. It first drains to the north, then swings to the northeast and after 40 kilometers at Givors it reaches the river Rhône , into which it joins as a right tributary. On his way he crosses the Loire and Rhône departments . The A47 motorway , which connects Saint-Étienne with the A7 motorway, follows its valley.
The Latin name of the river was Jaresis , from which on the one hand Gier arose, on the other hand the name suffix Jarez for the towns of Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez , Saint-Paul-en-Jarez and Saint-Romain-en-Jarez in the Gier Valley derives.
Technology history
The Romans carried the waters of Gier over an 85 km long aqueduct to Lugdunum ( Lyon ).
The engineer Marc Seguin built the railway line Saint-Étienne-Lyon through the valley of Gier from 1826 to 1832 and began the first railway operation with steam locomotives on the European continent on the section between Givors and Rive-de-Gier in 1831.
