Saint-Genest-Lerpt is a French commune in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The 6131 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) of the municipality call themselves Lerptiens . Saint-Genest-Lerpt belongs to the Arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and the canton of Saint-Étienne-3 .

geography

Saint-Genest-Lerpt is a banlieue of Saint-Étienne . It is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Villars in the north, Saint-Étienne in the northeast and east, La Ricamarie in the southeast, Le Chambon-Feugerolles in the south, Roche-la-Molière in the southwest, Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert in the west and La Fouillouse in the north-west.

The municipality is located on the edge of the Pilat Regional Nature Park and is associated with it as an access point.

history

The name has been known since the 11th century. 1085 the area was added to the chapter of the Metrolpolitankirche of Lyon . In 1173 Saint-Genest-Lerpt can be safely associated with the place with this name for the first time. In 1828 Landuzière-Cizeron became part of the municipality.
