history

The oldest sources in Waldkirch refer to the founding of the St. Margarethen women's monastery by the Swabian Duke Burchard II around the year 918. The settlement was later under the protection of the Schwarzenbergs , who built the Kastelburg and Schwarzenburg as well as the settlement in the 13th century fortified a city wall.

On August 8, 1300 Waldkirch was of the Schwarzenberg Reeves , the city charter granted. In 1459 the von Rechberg , 1546 Sebastian von Ehingen and 1560 Hans Raphael von Reischach inherited the bailiwick. In 1567 Archduke Ferdinand of Austria bought the Schwarzenberg rule with the town of Waldkirch. Until 1805, Waldkirch was an administrative town in front of Austria . Then it fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden , where it was the official city of the district of the same name until 1936. Since then it has belonged to the district of Emmendingen .

In the period from 1933 to 1945, in addition to a local NSDAP group, there was both an SA and an SS storm in Waldkirch. The SS storm was, among others, the then resident in Waldkirch and for the subsequent killing of Lithuanian Jews chiefly responsible Karl Jäger founded. On June 11, 1939, what was then the primary and secondary school was renamed the Paul-Mauk-Schule , a student celebrated by Nazi propaganda and considered the youngest soldier on the German side in the First World War. In 1946, the school was renamed as the elementary school in Schwarzenbergschule Waldkirch. Today a plaque in front of the school commemorates this episode in school history. Further evidence of the Nazi era in Waldkirch include the war memorial in Kollnau and the Nazi propaganda murals by the artist Schroeder-Schoenenberg in the Waldkirch town hall that were covered during the renovation .

After the Second World War , which the city survived largely undamaged, Waldkirch belonged to the federal state of (Southern) Baden and thus became part of the newly formed state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952 . Today's town was re-formed in the course of community reform on January 1, 1975 by the merger of the town of Waldkirch and the communities of Buchholz and Kollnau under the name Waldkirch-Kollnau and renamed Waldkirch on the same day. Already on July 1, 1971, the community Suggental and on January 1, 1973 the community Siensbach was incorporated into Waldkirch. On January 1, 2009, Waldkirch was elevated to a major district town.

Old coat of arms of Waldkirch

description

The coat of arms of Waldkirch is a speaking coat of arms . It shows a black six-mountain in blue, on which a church with a red roof and a gold cross stands in silver. This arrangement is framed on the right flank by a silver linden branch and on the left flank by a silver oak branch. The church between the lime and oak branches symbolizes the city name. The Sechsberg comes from the coat of arms of the Lords of Schwarzenberg . The coat of arms is based on the oldest known seal from the 13th century and was awarded to the city on May 5, 1976.

Old coat of arms

Between 1634 and 1976 the city used a coat of arms without the six mountain. Divided by blue and green, a double-tower church on the main site, lined with two silver trees to the right and left. Three other silver trees are depicted in the base of the shield.

Economy and Infrastructure

Waldkirch has a long industrial and craft past. The tradition of gemstone cutting goes back to the Middle Ages and is still represented today by the Wintermantel company . Waldkirch organ building, founded by Matthias Martin in 1799, was expanded to include barrel organs and music automats in the 19th century and enjoyed a worldwide reputation until the 1920s. Organ building is continued today by the company Jäger & Brommer as well as Paul Fleck Söhne , Achim Schneider and Wolfram Stützle. During the industrial revolution , Waldkirch was - like the entire Elztal - a well-known location for the textile industry . However, little remains of this today, especially the Gütermann company in neighboring Gutach . On the other hand, the optical and electrical engineering industry, represented by Sick , and paper processing , represented by August Faller KG, grew strongly after the Second World War .

Wine has been successfully grown in the Buchholz district since 1877 , and Buchholz is also known nationwide for the cultivation of fruit and berries. In the Suggental district, several silver mines were in operation in the Middle Ages ( Suggental silver mine ). Parts of the pits were exposed again by the Suggental mining research group and can be viewed by prior arrangement.

Also the tourism is a relevant economic sector. Waldkirch is located on the Deutsche Uhrenstrasse and is part of the Deutsche Orgelstrasse network.

Winter sports enthusiasts will get their money's worth at the lifts on the Kandel local mountain . The partial valley run "Nordhang" is particularly demanding here.

Since April 30, 2016, Waldkirch has a new outdoor pool in the Kollnau district.

Row of houses below the Kastelburg
  • The City Chapel of Our Lady is probably the oldest surviving building in the city. The building dates back to 1336 and was built by the townspeople in order not to have to go to the "Leutkirche" St. Walburga, which was outside the town walls, for worship, which was difficult in winter and dangerous in times of war.
The chapel was rebuilt in 1931 and expanded to include the choir , in which the baroque high altar is installed. The side figures of this altar are ascribed to Christian Wentzinger .
In the church there are pictures of the Stations of the Cross, which were created in 1938 by Georg Scholz , who was also mayor of the city for a short time after the end of World War II before he died. The organ was built in 1894 by the organ builder workshop Anton Kiene from Waldkirch and replaced an instrument from 1844.
  • The Catholic town church St. Margarethen (former collegiate church of the collegiate monastery of the same name), built 1732–1734 by the Vorarlberg baroque master builder Peter Thumb .
  • Church square with a fully preserved ensemble of baroque former canons of the collegiate monastery of St. Margarethen
  • Market place with historical buildings, see town hall (Waldkirch)
  • Ruins of the Kastelburg
  • Ruin of the Schwarzenburg

Museums

In the Elztal Museum , located in the baroque former Propsteig building , Kirchplatz 14, important examples of Waldkirch barrel organ and music automat construction are exhibited alongside regional folk art and historical documents.
