The Stadtrainsee is a small lake (about 100 meters long, 30 meters wide and at the deepest point about 4.50 meters deep) in Waldkirch near Freiburg . The lake is located at the foot of the Hugenwald in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park . It originated from the former ice pond of a brewery.

A bathtub race takes place once a year on the Stadtrainsee, which is used as a recreational area , in which two people paddle lengthways across the lake in a bathtub .

  1. ^ History. In: Hirschen-Bräu. Hirschenbrauerei Waldkirch GmbH & Co. KG, accessed on January 30, 2009 : “The Stadtrainsee emerged from the brewery's former ice pond. This was needed to extract ice in winter and to store it in the still existing tunnels of the adjacent mountain. Before machine production, the ice was broken in winter and stored in cellars. It stayed there until the summer months, when it could be used for cooling. "
