About this picture

Vörstetten is a municipality in the Emmendingen district in Baden-Württemberg and is located a few kilometers north of Freiburg im Breisgau .

geography

Community structure

The municipality of Vörstetten includes the village of Vörstetten and the hamlet of Schupfholz, which is about two kilometers northwest of Vörstetten near the neighboring towns of Reute and Holzhausen , about three kilometers from the A5 Freiburg-Nord exit. In the municipality of Vörstetten are the abandoned villages Sulzhof and Thiermondingen .

history

Archaeological findings show that the present district of Vörstetten was already settled 7000 years ago. The first documentary mention comes from the year 993.

Between 1111 and 1179 the local noble lords of Vörstetten, who were ministerials of the Zähringer , are documented. The Lords of Schwarzenberg and the Lords of Falkenstein also owned land in the village . In 1405 Vörstetten became part of the margraviate of Baden-Hachberg .

Vörstetten experienced a heyday in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses from this time still bear witness to this. Nevertheless, there were two emigration movements during this period: In the 18th century, about 50 people went to Transylvania and the Banat ; In the 19th century around 350 people from Vörstetten sought their way to America.

administration

In 1972, the communities of Vörstetten and Denzlingen merged to form an administrative association, which the neighboring community of Reute also joined two years later . The association carries out administrative tasks for its member communities. Among other things, it is the school authority for all schools in the association area and maintains a joint building yard.

coat of arms

The blazon of the coat of arms of Vörstetten reads: In a split shield in front in gold (yellow) a red sloping bar, behind in blue a rising golden (yellow) crab next to a pole-like (silver) white plow knife.

The coat of arms was also proven as a seal stamp for the period from 1613 to 1779.

The right (front) half of the split shield cites the Baden coat of arms , which all communities formerly belonging to the margraviate of Baden-Hachberg carry.

The left (rear) half of the coat of arms is the individual coat of arms of the village of Vörstetten. The crayfish refers to the crayfish that used to be found in large numbers in the local waters of Schobbach, Mühlbach, Futterholzbach, Riemenbach and Rossschwämmebächle. Cancer is the oldest part of the coat of arms. Already the rule of the Tiefburg in the 12./13. Century introduced the cancer as heraldic animal. From this it should have been included in the municipal coat of arms. Heraldically , the cancer means defensiveness and agility.

The colors blue and yellow can often be found in local club colors or at local festivities.
