Test Drive is a computer game series in the racing simulation genre . The series is one of the oldest of its genre, the first part was produced and published by Accolade in 1987 . The series was marketed by Atari from 2000, and Bigben Interactive has held the rights since 2016 .

description

The player controls a car and must try to get the "test car" to the destination as quickly as possible. You should keep to the speed limit, which, however, jeopardizes the task of transferring the car as quickly as possible. If you get into a radar control, the police will follow the vehicle. There are two ways in which you can react: Either by stopping and paying the ticket or by accelerating to escape the police as much as possible. Pay attention to oncoming traffic. The graphics are 3D and the steering wheel can be seen from the driver's perspective. A route along a slope (Pacific Coast Highway) was popular. The hallmark of the game was the breaking windshield in the event of an accident.

The first title in the series was developed in 1987 by the Canadian studio Distinctive Software and published via Accolade . In 2000 the French publisher Infogrames took over Accolade and with it the trademark rights to Test Drive . Under Infogrames, which later renamed Atari, the series was further developed by various studios, including Eden Games with the successful Test Drive Unlimited . In 2016 the French publisher Bigben Interactive acquired the trademark rights to Test Drive , only the distribution rights for the games already published remained with Atari.

information The bottom line refers to the PSP and PS2 version.

With Test Drive Unlimited , Atari is trying to implement the genre of the MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) for racing games as well. The developers therefore created the term MOOR ( Massively Open Online Racing ). Eden Games has realistically recreated around 1,600 kilometers of road and the area around the island of Oahu in the Hawaii archipelago.

The game was released for the Xbox 360 , PSP , PS2 and PC , although the versions for PS2 and PSP do not differ in scope. There are a total of 91 vehicles: including motorcycles of all classes, vintage cars such as the Pontiac Firebird , production cars such as the Audi TT Quattro Sport and super sports cars such as Ferrari Enzo Ferrari , Saleen S7 , McLaren F1 / F1 GTR. There are also many, primarily American, concept cars , for example the Chrysler Me-Four-Twelve. With a chargeable Carpack in April 2008, 45 more cars and another motorcycle ( Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R ) were added, including several vehicles from the German car manufacturer RUF Automobile , whose vehicles are based on various vehicles from Porsche.

The servers for the multiplayer mode were shut down on September 28, 2012 at 11:00 CEST. PC gamers can play the game online on private servers using the "Project Paradise" modification published on September 28, 2014 .

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is the continuation of Test Drive Unlimited, released in 2011. 101 vehicles are available, including many well-known manufacturers such as B. Aston Martin , RUF and Gumpert . Test Drive Unlimited 2 takes place in the initial phase on the Balearic island of Ibiza , with approx. 930 km and in the further course of the game also on the island of Oahu , already known from Test Drive Unlimited , with approx. 2200 km. Other innovations include: B. a day / night change (24h correspond to 2.5h), as well as a dynamic weather system. Furthermore, the contact between individual players in this MMORPG has been made easier. The player has the option, for example in (paid) Casino - DLC to contact other players in contact.

From 2011 there were closure quarrels between Atari and the development studio Eden Games , which impaired game support. This was partly intercepted by the user community through the development of fan patches , which try to fix remaining problems and deficiencies themselves.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown was announced at Nacon Connect on July 7th, 2020 . The game is now being developed by Kylotonn .
