The Hugenwald tunnel is a 1135 m long road tunnel in which the B 294 crosses the town of Waldkirch in the Elztal . The two-lane two-way traffic tunnel runs in a west-east direction south of the city.
construction
The first plans for the construction of a bypass tunnel for Waldkirch were made in the 1950s. Surveying work began in 1969, and three planning variants were worked out. The plan approval decision was made in 1977. The tunnel was first opened on September 23, 1980, and the tunnel breakthrough on August 25, 1981. The tunnel was then expanded by 1985. The tunnel was opened on Friday, December 13, 1985 by Dietmar Schlee , then Minister of the Interior and Transport of Baden-Württemberg . At that time the Hugenwald tunnel was the longest single-tube road tunnel in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The tunnel is passed by almost 20,000 vehicles every day. The maximum permissible speed in the tunnel is normally 80 km / h. The ventilation takes place as longitudinal ventilation with a central chimney. A little outside the center of the tunnel there is a central cavern with a 60 m high exhaust chimney.
Safety retrofitting and renovation
After two and a half years of renovation for 27 million euros with temporary closure, the Hugenwald tunnel was opened to traffic again in June 2014. In the first construction phase, a 2.25 m wide and high rescue tunnel was built parallel to the main tunnel. Preparatory work for this began in spring 2011. The operating technology was housed in a new tunnel operations building at the east portal north of the B 294. In the second phase, the existing tunnel was renovated.
Others
The six cables (two three-phase circuits ) of the 110 kV double line between the Denzlingen and Bleibach substations are also laid in the tunnel, which among other things supplies the rear Elz Valley with electrical energy.
