Play arena in the zoo

In the Black Forest Zoo there are almost exclusively outdoor enclosures and a small pond, which can be reached via an approximately 830 meter long circular path. Ibex, Valais goats, sika deer, donkeys, llamas and alpacas are kept in the open enclosures. Numerous bird aviaries and smaller animal enclosures provide additional replacement habitats . In the center of the zoo there is a large playground with seating and picnic areas as well as food trucks that are open during holidays and weekends, as well as a barbecue area. Next to the play arena is the petting zoo, where pygmy goats and Ouessant sheep can be fed. A few benches and smaller wooden huts are scattered across the zoo. From the newly built footbridge in the spacious raccoon enclosure, you can look directly into the adjacent lynx enclosure.

Zoo History

A pair of Carpathian Eagle Owls, which were donated to the city of Waldkirch in December 1956, formed the basis for an animal enclosure, which was opened on May 30, 1957 and operated by a tenant until 1980. After extensive renovation work based on a concept by the then director of the Heidelberg zoo, Dieter Poley, the Black Forest zoo reopened on April 16, 1982 and has since been operated by the city of Waldkirch. Since January 1, 2013, the Black Forest Zoo has been leased to the Friends of the Black Forest Zoo.
