The yellow -headed amazon, also Surinam amazon ( Amazona ochrocephala ), is a species of bird from the family of real parrots .
description
Yellow-headed amazons reach a body length of 35 to 38 centimeters. Their body plumage is green. The yellow part on the head gives it its name. Yellow-headed amazons have a loud voice and are able to imitate sounds from their environment well. They are cave breeders . The female lays two to four eggs. The incubation period is about 26 days. After nine weeks, the young birds leave the breeding cave. The yellow-headed amazon live in tropical rainforests and eat fruits , seeds and other parts of plants.
Subspecies
Besides the nominate Amazona ochrocephala ochrocephala other three subspecies are distinguished, formerly the subspecies of now demarcated were yellow-headed Amazon ( A. oratrix ) Tres Marías-Amazon ( A. tresmariae ) and the yellow-naped amazon ( A. auropalliata ) added counted:
- Natterer's amazon ( Amazona ochrocephala nattereri )
- Yellow-fronted Amazon ( Amazona ochrocephala panamensis )
- Maraja Amazon ( Amazona ochrocephala xantholaema )
Occurrence
Its natural range is Brazil , Peru , Guiana States, Trinidad , Venezuela and Colombia . In 1994 the IUCN estimated the population to be less than 7,000 birds. The population declined due to the destruction of the rainforests and illegal catches for the zoo trade.
