The spotted eagle ( Bubo africanus ) is a bird art from the genus Rhus . With a body length of 42 centimeters, the birds reach about the size of the native tawny owl . They are gray or red-brown in color.
Distribution and way of life
It is common in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Arabia and is the most common larger owl in Africa. As a habitat it prefers rocky areas in tree savannahs, semi-deserts and light forests. It is active at dusk and at night. From a higher vantage point, it hunts small mammals , lizards , large insects and occasionally birds . The Fleckenuhu builds its nest on the ground, between or under rocks. The breeding season begins in the dry season, so the young birds fledge at the beginning of the rainy season and find enough food.
According to the IUCN , the Fleckenuhu is common, at least in parts of its large distribution area, and is not an endangered species ( least concern ).
Subspecies
Two subspecies of the Fleckenuhus are known: Bubo africanus africanus ( Temminck , 1821) and Bubo africanus milesi ( Sharpe , 1886). Subspecies names that are not generally recognized are B. africanus cinerascens , B. africanus kollmannspergeri , B. africanus tanae .
