history

The company was founded by Erwin Sick in Vaterstetten near Munich in 1946 . The commercial breakthrough came in 1952 with the presentation of the first series-production accident prevention light curtain at the international machine tool trade fair in Hanover . In 1956 the company moved from Vaterstetten to Waldkirch . At that time, the company had 25 employees. In 1972 the first subsidiary was founded in France . In 1975 the company expanded overseas and founded another subsidiary in the USA . Founder Erwin Sick died in 1988 at the age of 79. From then on, his wife Gisela Sick took over the management of the company as the main shareholder. In 1996 Erwin Sick GmbH became a stock corporation . The first issue of employee shares in Germany and abroad took place in 1999. In 2016, Sick AG celebrated its 70th company anniversary.

Five laser scanners manufactured by the company , which are also used as sensors in the area of property protection (security), port and robotics , were used on the driverless car Stanley , which won the Darpa Grand Challenge in 2005. In May 2012 the company installed a thermal portal on the Austrian side of the Karawanken tunnel . This scanner measures the brake temperature of the passing truck and sounds an alarm if the brakes on a vehicle have become too hot. For this invention, the company received the German Innovation Prize in 2013 in the field of dangerous goods transport .

The company has been one of Germany's best employers for several years. Sick AG is a member of the trade association for industrial companies in Baden .
