Markets are inextricably linked with the history of the city of Freiburg , the founding of the city in 1120 coincides with the market rights granted by Konrad von Zähringen , the first fair was permitted by King Wenceslaus of Prague in 1379 , and Freiburg became an international market several times a year Trading center. The Münsterplatz , and later also the Stühlinger Kirchplatz as a place for entertainment fairs, were important centers. Between 1885 and 1914 at least six Völkerschauen took place at the Freiburg spring and autumn fair , at which people from Africa and today's Sri Lanka were exhibited, a not uncommon event at trade fairs at the time. In 1929, today's Alte Messplatz , which had previously been used for sporting purposes, was inaugurated in the east of the city . To the east of it, the town hall was built in 1954 on Schwarzwaldstraße based on a design by Albert Maria Lehr. In the five decades of its use, congresses, sporting and social events, festivities, concerts, exhibitions and trade fairs have taken place here. After being used as a provisional university library from autumn 2008 until the new library was completed in July 2015, it has served as an emergency shelter for refugees since the end of 2015. The hall is now a listed building .

The move of the trade fair to the north of the city was decided in the mid-nineties: The first construction phase with its three exhibition halls and a total of 18,500 m² of usable and service space was completed in just under one and a half years and on January 17, 2000, three years after the corresponding municipal council resolution, put into operation. By relocating the trade fair, a building area was also created on the "Old Messplatz". This now enriches the surrounding districts of Wiehre , Oberau , Waldsee and Littenweiler with 180 new residential units and a shopping center (Oberwiehre center).

In autumn 1999, the first public festival, the Freiburg Autumn Mass , took place on the new outdoor area . With the investment of around 75 million euros, Freiburg had four times as much exhibition space available as before. Cultural events could now be held in Hall 2 with up to 10,000 spectators. On March 25, 2003, the Freiburg municipal council decided to build a fourth hall. Construction began in November 2004. The state supported the second construction phase of the trade fair with a grant of 2.9 million euros from the support program for trade fair investments. The total investment for the fourth hall was around 22.9 million euros, most of which was spent by regional companies. The construction of the first three exhibition halls and the subsequent fourth with the foyer extension were an award-winning design and the realization of the Freiburg architect Detlef Sacker . The first name sponsor was the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus and so the hall was called Rothaus-Arena until 2016 . In January 2017 it was for the next ten years Template: future / in 5 yearsin Sick -Arena renamed.

The first pop star to appear here on October 8, 2006 was the singer Pink in front of 4500 spectators. For the concert, the Rothaus-Arena, which usually holds 9,000 people, was limited to around 5,000 seats by a curtain. The new hall was inaugurated at the start of the international trade fair " Intersolar " in 2006.

The Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus contributed around 12.5 million euros to the investment volume for the first construction phase of the exhibition stand as well as the necessary road and public transport connections and all other costs, around 4 million euros came directly from the state of Baden-Württemberg, 7 million . from land sales by the city in the country for the expansion of the university into the city treasury, the city provided more than 10.5 million euros as a contribution to the exhibition object carrier company. The marketing of the old measuring site in the east of the city, where a district and a shopping center were being built, brought in almost 12 million euros. For the external development of the fair and the demolition of the old exhibition halls at the old location, the city brought in more than 9 million euros, the federal and state governments contributed around 10 million euros. During the construction, all time and cost plans were adhered to.

The then announced doubling of the trade fair turnover to six million euros by 2010 was exceeded in 2007 with over 7.9 million euros, in 2010 with 15 million euros. The indirect profitability for the Freiburg economy, trade and gastronomy that results from the trade fair industry has tripled to over 60 million euros per year during this time. The biggest events of the last ten years included the tour de France guest appearance in 2000, a Herbert Grönemeyer open air concert with 54,000 visitors, the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama and television shows ( Wetten, dass ..? , Candid Camera , Musician barn , ...) and the world Championships in indoor cycling in 2005 and in artistic roller skating. The number of occupancy days rose between 2005 and 2007 from around 220 to around 330.

As part of the Pope's visit to Germany in 2011 , Benedict XVI celebrated . on September 24, 2011, a prayer vigil with 28,000 young people at the exhibition center in Freiburg.
