The Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus AG is a brewery based in Rothaus , a district of Grafenhausen , which is located in the southern Black Forest at around 1,000 meters above sea level not far from the Schluchsee , making it the highest brewery in Germany. It is owned by the state-owned holding company of the state of Baden-Württemberg . The Rothaus brewery experienced a rapid boom in the 1990s and now sells ten percent of its beer production outside of Baden-Württemberg.

The Chairman of the Supervisory Board is the Minister for Rural Areas and Consumer Protection of the State of Baden-Württemberg Peter Hauk (CDU).

history

The red in "Rothaus" goes back to the patrician family Roth from the Klettgau , who settled in Grafenhausen around 1300 and began building the Rothen House in 1340 . A certain Michael Kaiser bought the house around 1660, was granted the license to drink by the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien and from then on used it as an inn. The monastery acquired the inn over 100 years later and replaced it with a new building with the same function.

Under Prince Abbot Martin Gerbert , the monks' council decided at the end of 1790 to begin the first brewing attempts in January 1791. Gerbert intended to upgrade his imperial rule Bonndorf compared to the neighboring principality of Fürstenberg , which had already had the brewing rights since the 13th century, from which the Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Brewery would later emerge. In addition, the brewery was a measure of economic development , with which the allegedly overpriced beer from Donaueschingen should be fended off and jobs should be created. If one believes the vernacular, however, the monks wanted to stop the Black Forests from drinking schnapps.

In relation to the dominions of St. Blasien and Bonndorf, the location was in a convenient location in the middle of large forests and close to abundant water resources, so that extensive brewing operations could begin in 1792. The brewing water is still obtained today from seven in-house springs. As a result of the secularization , the monastery and its property passed to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806 , from which time the brewery was called the Grand Ducal Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus .

The name Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus , which the brewery has been using since the abolition of the monarchy as a result of the November Revolution of 1918, was retained when the property rights were passed to the state of Baden-Württemberg , the successor to the state of Baden . Since 1922, the company has had the legal form of a stock corporation , whose shares are now 100 percent held by Beteiligungsgesellschaft des Landes Baden-Württemberg mbH .

Between 1920 and 1933 Max Jäger , who later became mayor of Rastatt, was director of the Rothaus brewery. Under CEO Norbert Nothhelfer , who was previously the district president in Freiburg , Rothaus doubled its beer output in an overall shrinking market in the 1990s. The capacity was expanded to one million hectoliters per year. In 1992 Rothaus acquired the Dominican Island of Constance from the state of Baden-Württemberg, including the island hotel on it, which is leased to the Steigenberger Hotel Group . On October 1, 2004, Thomas Schäuble , former Minister of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg, became director of the brewery.

In the 2006 financial year, the production volume was 937,000 hectoliters and the turnover was 88.2 million euros. The company sold around 90 percent of its beer output in Baden-Württemberg; Rothaus is the second largest brewery in the state after Eichbaum .

At the end of 2007, Rothaus acquired the hotel next to the brewery area and set up a fan shop there. On an area of around one hectare, a small adventure park was created with the Gäpfleweg, opened in 2008, and a playground. In addition, the state road 170 was relocated and a roundabout was built in order to become more attractive as a destination due to the created distance to the road. In 2011, a total of 232 people were employed in Rothaus and the two brewery's own sales branches.

After Thomas Schäuble became seriously ill, Baden-Württemberg's ex-finance minister Gerhard Stratthaus took over the management of the brewery on September 5, 2012.

Since July 1, 2013, the company has been managed by sole director Christian Rasch . Rasch is the first non-politician in several decades to head the state brewery. When the common practice of former CDU-led state governments (and also the new green-red government) of filling management positions in state companies with former politicians met with increasing public criticism, the Green Minister of Agriculture Alexander Bonde initiated a job advertisement for this post for the first time , for which the company hired the Swiss headhunter Egon Zehnder .

Rasch has been Sales and Marketing Director at Stuttgarter Hofbräu since 2008 and, from 2010, also spokesman for the management. The Stuttgarter Zeitung described Rasch's move from Hofbräu to Rothaus as "spectacular" due to the circumstances.

In the anniversary year 2016 (225 years of Rothaus, 60 years of Tannenzäpfle), Stefan Strumbel designed two 15 meter high spruce cones made of Corten steel on behalf of the brewery , which were set up next to the roundabout in front of the brewery.

label

A blonde Black Forest girl in traditional costume is depicted on all bottles, holding a glass of beer in each hand. Rothaus drinkers have given it the fictional name Biergit Kraft ; the name arose from the Alemannic pronunciation of the phrase "beer git (= gives) strength". The brewery now uses it in advertising.

The label on the Tannenzäpfle bottles also shows seven pine cones . It is noticeable that the pine cones that give the name are depicted hanging on the label, while they stand upright on branches of the Abies genus ( fir ). Oral tradition justifies this with the fact that the bottles are upside down again when drinking. In reality, the red fir , which is native to the Black Forest and which is a spruce plant, has cones hanging from the branches on the label .

Today's Tannenzäpfle label has been used since 1972. The girl and the pine cones were already shown on the first label from 1956 as a photo-realistic illustration, which the brewery stuck on the bottles again in 2006 for the 50th anniversary of the brand.
