Gerhard Stratthaus (born March 22, 1942 in Heidelberg ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 1998 to 2008 he was Finance Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Schwetzingen in 1961 , Stratthaus completed a commercial internship and studied business administration until 1966, graduating as a commercial teacher at the University of Mannheim . He then worked until 1973 as an education officer at the Heinrich-Pesch-Haus in Ludwigshafen.

Stratthaus has and has held supervisory board or administrative board positions at various companies and institutions. During his tenure as Finance Minister of Baden-Württemberg, he sat on the administrative boards of Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) and L-Bank as well as on the supervisory board of Baden-Württembergische Bank (BW-Bank). From 2002 to 2012 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW), an economic research institute that is mainly financed by funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg and the federal government. He has been a member of the supervisory board of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg since 2011. On September 5, 2012, the supervisory board of the Rothaus brewery , to which Stratthaus has been a member since 1996, temporarily elected him as sole director of the company, as the previous director Thomas Schäuble became seriously ill. His successor was Christian Rasch in July 2013 .

In July 2008, he took over the chairmanship of the Baden-Württemberg Leadership Academy, which qualifies and trains executives and employees in the public sector.

Between October 2008 and June 2011, Stratthaus was a member of the three-person management committee of the Financial Market Stabilization Fund ( FMS or SoFFin ), which was supposed to ensure the business capacity of German banks in the wake of the international financial crisis .

Stratthaus is married and lives in Brühl .

politics

Stratthaus was a member of the municipal council from 1968 to 1973 and then mayor of Brühl until 1981 . Between 1981 and 1998 he headed the administration of Schwetzingen ; first as mayor and after Schwetzingen was elevated to a major district town in 1993 as lord mayor . In 1992 Stratthaus was elected to the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg as a representative of constituency 40 (Schwetzingen) . From 1996 to 1998 he was the financial policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group there. He chaired the European Committee until 2011.

Under Prime Minister Erwin Teufel , Stratthaus replaced Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder as Baden-Württemberg Minister of Finance on November 11, 1998 . He kept this office under Teufel's successor Günther Oettinger , who, however, replaced him on June 4, 2008 as part of a cabinet reshuffle with Willi Stächele .

In the current electoral term, Stratthaus is a member of the Committee for Europe and International Affairs and a deputy member of the Committee for Finance and Economics and the Committee on Petitions. He is also a member of the CDU Baden-Wuerttemberg State Executive Committee.

Schwetzingen and Brühl awarded Stratthaus honorary citizenship .
