The old town forms the city and business center of Freiburg im Breisgau and is the core of the original city. It is divided into the two districts 111 Altstadt-Mitte and 112 Altstadt-Ring. The Altstadt-Mitte district represents the built-up area of the city at the time it was founded and thus the actual old town. This is followed by the Altstadt-Ring district west to the railway line and south to the Dreisam . In the east, both districts border the Schlossberg .

At the end of 2013, around 7400 people were registered as resident residents in the district.

The Altstadt-Mitte district is based on the pattern of all the cities founded by the Zähringers: a street cross divides the city into four quarters, the church and town hall are not in the same quarter. The center of the city is the Bertoldsbrunnen , where the main axes Kaiser-Joseph-Straße and Salz- / Bertoldstraße cross. The city administration has its headquarters in the old and new town hall . In contrast, the regional council moved its headquarters from the old town to a new building in the Betzenhausen district at the end of the 1990s , although the seat of the regional president remained in the representative Basler Hof in the old town.

Neighboring districts are the Stühlinger in the west, Neuburg in the north, the Oberau in the east and beyond the Dreisam the Wiehre in the south.

Attractions

The old town is dominated by the Freiburg Minster on Münsterplatz . Most of the other architectural sights of the city, such as the Schwabentor , Martinstor , and Augustinermuseum are also located here. The Freiburg Bächle have their highest point in the old town and from there flow through the whole city center. The Schlossberg borders directly on Freiburg's old town. From the Schlossberg tower you have a panoramic view of all parts of the city and its surroundings.

Sedan district / In the green

The Sedanquartier and im Grün district, named after Sedanstrasse and Im Grün , is the largest contiguous residential area in the old town and belongs to district 112 Altstadt-Ring. It stretches between Bertoldstrasse in the north, Platz der Alten Synagoge , Platz der Universität and Werthmannstrasse in the east, Dreisam in the south and the Rhine Valley Railway in the west.

After the fortress that Vauban had built in 1677, the settlement of the fortress slopes began in 1744 ( Glacis : hence the Glacisweg). In 1845 the railway construction reached Freiburg. The establishment of the freight yard on Schnewlinstrasse in 1865 led to the establishment of the Fauler iron foundry on the commercial canal and other iron processing companies such as Grether and the Specht coal merchant as well as corresponding residential buildings. The street names Moltke, Sedan and Wilhelmstrasse are reminiscent of the Franco-German War in 1871. With French reparations money and French sandstone, among other things , the quarter was expanded to include the upper class. Art Nouveau houses in the lower Wilhelmstrasse still bear witness to this today. In the 1970s and 1980s, social tensions also reached the quarter with squatting and demonstrations and to this day this quarter with the Grether area and Spechtpassage is considered the left-alternative spot in green Freiburg. This was followed by the construction of the concert hall , the Cinemaxx, the reconstruction of the station axis and the traffic calming with light rail construction on the eastern edge of the district, which further upgraded it. The Citizens' Forum has been taking care of the concerns of residents and businesses since 1995 .

Economy and Infrastructure

trade

The old town with its cathedral market and the shops and department stores on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, among others, is an important destination for the residents of Freiburg and the surrounding area as well as tourists . Here, too, as in other cities, the city and the action group of dealers Z'Friburg try to maintain the city 's attractiveness. Since 1979 there has always been a market with art in the upper old town in the alleys between the historic department store, Augustinerplatz and Schwabentor.

culture and education

The old town is the center of Freiburg's cultural life; The city theater , the concert hall, most of the museums and cinemas, the main office of the city library and the planetarium at the main train station are located here .

Alternative culture can also be found in the old town, mainly in the Sedan district / Im Grün . Two centers are the Specht-Passage , with the Jos Fritz bookstore and the café of the same name and the Harrys Depot theater , as well as the Grether factory , a former foundry where the studios of Radio Dreyeckland are located, the Rosa Hilfe Freiburg and the Strandcafé .

The center of the Albert Ludwig University with the humanities and social sciences faculties and the university library is also located in the old town . In addition to the adult education center , the city library is also located in the old town.

traffic

The Altstadt-Mitte district has been largely a pedestrian zone since the mid-1970s. However, today the tram runs on the two main axes of the old town, Kaiser-Joseph-Straße or Bertoldstraße and Salzstraße . The intersections of the lines at Bertoldsbrunnen and Stadttheater in the city center are the most important hubs for public transport in Freiburg, along with the main train station on the edge of the old town on the border with the Stühlinger district.

When the ring road between the two districts was closed in 2012, the pedestrian zone was partially extended to the Altstadt-Ring district and a light rail line was built from the Kronenbrücke to Europaplatz from 2015 to 2018 . During that time, the Fahnenbergplatz, the Old Synagogue Square and the University Square were redesigned. The boundaries of the built-up old town are multi-lane roads as the main arteries for private transport. The parking facilities are concentrated in several parking garages on the main traffic axes, while residential and disabled parking spaces predominate in the remaining streets.

Green spaces

The old town has parks next to the Schlossberg, the Colombipark with the Colombischlössle on the former bastions and a small park with the main canteen on Rempartstraße. Another park can be found between Schwabentor and Dreisam, also on a former bastion at the Powder Tower.
