The Schlossberg Tower is a 33.27 meter high observation tower built in 2002 on the Schlossberg on the edge of the old town of Freiburg im Breisgau .

location

The location of the Schlossberg tower was not chosen on the summit of the Schlossberg, but on a gently sloping ridge , the Salzbüchslekuppe, which is around 500 meters east of the old town. The top of the tower is 463 meters above sea level, 185 meters above the mean height of the city (278 meters).

history

When the tower was completed , the load-bearing structure consisted of long Douglas fir trunks, which were replaced with steel supports in 2017 due to damage to the base of the trunks. The construction came from an initiative of the Kuratorium Schlossberg e. V. and was inaugurated in November 2002. Two thirds of the construction costs totaling 375,000 euros were financed from donations collected by the Board of Trustees. For each donor a plaque with his name was attached to the front of the steps so that their names can be read when climbing the tower.

description

The Schlossberg tower has 153 steps and is noticeable due to its unusual construction: long wood tree trunks were set up around a flight of stairs made of steel "like Mikado poles twisted against each other". The 34-meter-long Douglas firs from the Freiburg urban forest Ottilienwald used for this purpose were around a hundred years old and overturned by the effects of hurricane Lothar . They had a wood volume of 8 to 10 solid meters and together weighed about ten tons, which is why they were too heavy for the originally planned helicopter transport and had to be brought to their place of use with a special cable crane.

The tower has three viewing platforms , the top of which is reached via a small spiral staircase . It allows a panoramic view of the city of Freiburg and its surroundings. From the viewpoints below, however , you can only ever see parts of the city.

Redevelopment

Only after a fungal attack were the tree trunks chemically treated in 2009 to prevent them from decomposing quickly. Again and again, however, there was pest infestation, which resulted in the tower being temporarily closed, most recently in spring 2014. From June 7, 2014 to May 21, 2015, the tower was temporarily open after being secured with steel cables. In July 2015, the ailing logs were removed. The city had decided to replace them with steel supports, but the architect insisted on using wooden logs. In June 2016, the city finally put the renovation using steel columns to tender, the installation of which should originally take place by the beginning of June 2017. Due to delays in installing the supports, the Schlossberg tower was finally reopened on September 1st. The cost of the renovation was 192,000 euros, but the city expects the galvanized steel pylons to last for one hundred years. The architect may want to sue for infringement of copyright.

Others

The tower is closed on New Year's Eve for security reasons.
