The district is traversed by the Dreisam in its entire east-west extension . With a population density of 126.0 inhabitants per hectare of populated area (55.3 ha), it is the district of Freiburg with the second highest population density after the Vauban district (137.7) (as of 2017).
history
The Oberau was an early industrial area at the gates of the old town, favored by the commercial canal branched off from the Dreisam, from which the water for the Freiburg Bächle is also branched off in the Oberau area . In the Middle Ages there were mills and garnet grinders here, as can be seen in the Granatgässle , in the 19th century the large Carl Mez yarn factory with what was then spacious workers' apartments and factories for fine paper and cardboard were located here. After these operations were closed in the middle of the 20th century, partly because of the poor transport connections, the buildings and areas were mainly used for residential purposes.
After the Second World War , apartments and an administration building for the French armed forces present as occupation were built on a spacious area in the center of the district , which are now used for civilian purposes after their withdrawal. The proximity to the city center as well as to the great outdoors with the forests of the Schlossberg and the meadows on the Dreisam make the district an ideal residential area within the city.
Buildings and facilities
Today's Gasthaus zum Stahl, a former barn from the 18th century with a beer garden , and next to it the former servants' house with a large vaulted cellar, which the poor farmers from the Dreisamtal use as a farrier and parking lot for used their wagons on the way to the Münstermarkt, today part of the campsite on Hirzberg. Also from the 18th century comes the former inn "To the Holy Three Kings" from 1743, today's Dreikönigshaus in which a meeting place for people in need is run by a support association .
At the end of the 20th century, one of the factory buildings of the Mez yarn factory was converted into a broadcasting house for the Freiburg regional studio of Südwestrundfunk . - The Protestant Peace Church from the 1950s is on the eastern edge of the district. Right next to it, on the former site of the city nursery, are the Franco-German grammar school and the Freiburg University of Music .
The only remaining larger commercial enterprise is the private brewery Ganter with its visually dominating malting tower, which can also use its own deep well in the district. There is a large beer garden on the premises and music events from the fields of folk, rock and jazz take place in an old beer warehouse, the so-called Wodan Hall. In 2015, a former bottling hall was converted into the ballroom of the Gutmann dance school.
Other facilities located here are the branch of the Baden-Württemberg Finance Court , a school for educational assistance that works according to Waldorf education , a family care school, a large dormitory for trainees, a backpacker hotel, a senior citizens' residence, and a nursing home. In the former administration building of the French armed forces there are some units of the regional council of Freiburg . A curiosity is the existence of a lace factory that bravely asserts itself against competition from the Far East.
The ZO shopping center (Zentrum Oberwiehre) is located on the “Alten Messplatz”, on the border between the Oberau and Oberwiehre districts. The shopping center, which is equipped with various shops, restaurants and service providers, offers the east of the district a nearby shopping facility.
Viticulture
On the southern slopes of the Schlossberg in the north of the district there are still steep vineyards that extend to the edge of the old town and are managed by three wineries. These vineyards existed before the city of Freiburg was founded and expanded further on the slopes than today. This vineyard - Freiburg's Schlossberg - is one of the 100 best vineyards in Germany. The optimal solar radiation on the steep slopes in pure southern exposure gives along with the cool evening fall wind from the Black Forest, the Hoellental , and gneiss -Verwitterungsböden optimum conditions for excellent wines, some of which as Great Growth classified.
traffic
Two streets take on through traffic: the Black Forest Road, which has now been relieved of supra-regional through traffic by the new tunnel route of the B31 -East, on which the tram line 1 also provides convenient connections to other urban areas, and the Kartäuserstraße, which was traffic-calmed after the construction of the federal road. A bicycle expressway along the Dreisam connects the district with the western urban areas and in the east with the sports and leisure facilities there and the Dreisam valley .
