Signet / Logo GG for "Großes Gewächs", quality mark of German wines on the bottle neck (VDP Pfalz)

Großes Gewächs refers to the highest classification level for dry wines from wineries that are members of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter e. V. (VDP) and the Bernkasteler Ring are. In addition to the VDP's grape eagle logo, the VDP members' wine bottles bear the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS logo (GG grape logo embossed on the glass or shown on the front label). In the Rheingau wine-growing region , in addition to the name Großes Gewächs, the designation First Gewächs is permitted. Wine bottles of the classification level Großes Gewächs from the Bernkasteler Ring winegrowers' association are marked with the association's logo (a double G on a dark background and the lettering Bernkasteler Ring - Riesling Weingüter ).

An equivalent in France is the quality designation Grand Cru (French: cru here means wine-growing area, vineyard location, type of wine). The designation does not always refer to the same thing in different wine-growing regions: partly to the wine-growing region (e.g. Alsace ), partly to the location ( Burgundy ), partly to the winery ( Bordeaux ), partly to the wine-growing community ( Champagne ) . In this respect, the German quality designation includes more varied criteria.

VDP criteria

The use of the logo by members of the VDP is only permitted if certain criteria are met:

Apart from the other tax audits by the VDP or Bernkasteler Ring, applicants for the designation Großer Gewächs are checked and checked separately. The work in the vineyard and especially the yield level are monitored in each vineyard throughout the vegetation and also shortly before the harvest. Before and after the bottling there is a tasting by an examination committee.

Taste type

The dry Große Lage wines are referred to as Großes Gewächs , the noble sweet wines of these sites have the traditional predicates from Spätlese to Trockenbeerenauslese .

Marketing time

Fruit-sweet predicate wines will be launched on May 1st. The large growths of the VDP are not marketed before the first weekend in September of the year following the harvest. The big plants of the Bernkasteler Ring do not go on sale before August 1st of the year following the harvest. Pinot Noir ripen in wooden barrels for at least 12 months and so come onto the market another year later.
