The Ganter Brewery is a traditional brewery in Freiburg im Breisgau .

history

The brewery was founded in 1865 by the son of the landlord Ludwig "Louis" Ganter from Schönau in the Black Forest in the house Zum Kindlein Jesu ( Schiffstrasse 7 ), where Erasmus of Rotterdam lived from 1531 to 1534. Ganter used a remaining small brewery from the 18th century that he had acquired along with 700 wooden barrels. Until 1877 the beer of the flourishing brewery in the fast growing Freiburg was brewed in this house. It later became the main building with a restaurant and brewery bar.

In 1877, Ganter finally acquired a site in the Freiburg Oberau , the old oil mill , in order to be able to produce according to modern technical standards. At that time, the site was “on the green field” outside the city. In addition to the spacious brewery facilities designed for further growth, a separate deep well was created in order to have the best water available and a separate power plant was built.

Due to the economic boom in South Baden and improved production methods, the brewery continued to flourish and around the turn of the century also sold its beer to North Baden.

In the 1920s, Ganter's son, who had taken over the brewery, pushed through a state-of-the-art steam turbine for the small company-owned power plant against any expert advice . Even after the main building of the brewery in the old town was destroyed by the air raid on November 27, 1944 and the brewery facilities were damaged on December 2, 1944, the brewery was able to continue producing and, thanks to its autonomous turbine power supply, also supply the residents with fresh drinking water .

In the period between 1970 and 1980 the brewery was expanded in view of the expected strong growth. Large fermentation and storage cellars as well as a larger bottling facility were put into operation.

In 2002, Ganter opened a brewery bar at Freiburg Münsterplatz 18–20, in which, in addition to the Ganterbier, hearty dishes are also available.

The claim A beer like our country has been highlighted again since 2010 .

The beer output in 2007 was 135,000 hl. Current figures are not known. Due to the reduced annual beer consumption per capita in Germany from 151 liters in 1976 to almost 110 liters in 2009, there was enormous overcapacity in the German brewing industry. The competition resulted in considerable price pressure. The brewery therefore decided in 2010 to reduce its own overcapacities.

In 2011, a new fermentation and storage cellar and a new barrel bottling facility were put into operation. Bottling was meanwhile operated by the Karlsruhe Hatz-Moninger Brauhaus . During the renovation, the brewery made sure to commission 80% of the craftsmen's work from the local area. The measure reduced energy costs by over 50%. As a company of the “ ecological city” Freiburg, the brewery also has solar systems on the roof and sources its raw materials as far as possible from the surrounding area, some of them from organic farming .

The warehouses, the brewhouse and the outdoor area of the brewery are also used for large events and celebrations.

The Ganter brewery is a member of the trade association for industrial companies in Baden .

Ganter is the only brewery in Baden-Württemberg that keeps its own horses and delivers them with them. And in Germany there are only two breweries that deliver beer by horse.
