Landwasser is a western district of Freiburg im Breisgau , which was created 1964–66. Like the districts of Weingarten and Rieselfeld , it was laid out as a large housing estate .
location
Landwasser is surrounded by the Freiburg districts of Hochdorf in the north, Brühl in the northeast, Mooswald in the southeast and Lehen in the west. The district is largely surrounded by the moss forest, to the west it borders on the A5 motorway . It is bounded to the northeast by the Freiburg- Breisach railway line and to the west by the slight hill “Lehener Bergle”.
history
On April 28, 1964, the Freiburg municipal council approved the development plan for a completely new part of the city in the west of the city, for the “Landwassermatten” area, a swampy forest area. In spring 1965 construction began with the groundbreaking and in June 1966 the first residents could move in. The thousandth apartment was already occupied in February 1968. The development was a planned mixture of high-rise buildings and large apartment blocks on the one hand, and bungalows and single-family houses on the south-western edge of the residential area on the other. The residents were mainly young families who found relatively inexpensive living space here. A further increase in population resulted in the move to the Landwasser-Nord complex on Wirthstrasse, on the other side of Elsässer Strasse, in 1972 - a densely populated high-rise complex with many social housing in the style of those years. After the completion of the new Wirthstrasse, the high-rise complex on the left was affectionately known as “Max” (up to 16 floors) and the right side “Moritz” (up to 6 floors). The orange-colored and thus widely visible window frames were striking. The highest number of inhabitants was reached in 1975 with 9423 inhabitants.
Facilities
The infrastructure facilities were planned in the center of the district: Churches of the two major denominations - the Catholic Petrus Canisius Church and the Protestant Zacchaeus Church, kindergartens, the school center of the Albert Schweitzer schools with elementary school , secondary school and a special school for children and young people with learning disabilities, the house of encounter as a center for children, young people and districts, a market place and a shopping center.
Further facilities were added over the years: the hospital of the Protestant Diakonie as well as a private practice clinic, an old people's and nursing home of the workers' welfare and a training center of the Chamber of Crafts . A heating plant, which uses gas from a nearby, disused landfill , supplies some of the apartments with district heating. The Animal Hygiene Institute Freiburg (Chemical State Research Institute) is located on the western edge of the district, far away from the residential developments on the motorway.
The landmark of the district is the Red Otto, a twelve meter high group of red figures made of polyester and concrete, which was erected in a prominent place in 1973. The formally strongly reduced figures of man and woman, as well as the small square face, which according to the explanation of the artist Eberhard Rau symbolizes a demonic faun , can rotate in the upper area of the sculpture depending on the air movement. The Rote Otto has been a cultural monument since 2013 and was restored in 2015.
traffic
The tram line 1 (Landwasser-Littenweiler) with the stops Moosgrund , Diakoniekrankenhaus and the final stop Moosweiher connects the district with the city center. From the final stop Moosweiher there are bus connections in the direction of March , Kaiserstuhl , the districts of Hochdorf , Mooswald and the northern industrial area . There are four bus stops in Landwasser: CVUA , Moosweiher , Wirthstraße and Diakoniekrankenhaus . The S1 (Freiburg-Breisach) serves the Freiburg Landwasser stop in the northern part of Landwasser.
A well-developed network of cycle paths creates connections to the other parts of the city of Freiburg. The main access road for motorized traffic is Elsässerstraße, which - also at the intersection with the west bypass - connects the district with the Freiburg road network.
There is a Park and Ride car park at the Moosweiher stop .
freetime and recreation
Landwasser is laid out like a park and is located in the moss forest, which can be used for walks and sporting activities. Inside is the Moosweiher , a former gravel pit with a halfpipe for skateboarders and inline skaters on the north bank.
coat of arms
Landwasser's coat of arms is divided into four. In the upper left and lower right fields the Georgskreuz of the city of Freiburg is depicted in three-dimensional form, in the other two fields there is a golden frog on a blue background, an indication of the water-rich location of the district and its name.
