Arc Angels is a blues rock band from Austin, Texas , founded in the early 1990s . It was then considered a continuation of the style embodied by Stevie Ray Vaughan .

history

The band Arc Angels was formed by Doyle Bramhall II , who had already been part of the live line-up of The Fabulous Thunderbirds at a young age , and Charlie Sexton , both singer and guitarist, with the addition of the rhythm section of the band of the recently fatally injured Stevie Ray Vaughan, bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton, founded. The name is not derived from “archangel” ( English for archangel ) or “ark” (English for ark ), but rather goes back to the initials of the Austin Rehearsal Center rehearsal room complex. Around 1990 , where there were several rental offices and practice rooms , they had originally stayed independently of one another, got to know each other over time and not only jammed for fun , but had even performed in public. At some point Bramhall II asked Sexton for support with his new composition Living in a Dream and both brought Shannon and Layton, who were still disoriented because of the sudden death of Vaughan. Slowly the musicians had become a unit that now wanted to present itself to the outside world as a band. The self-titled debut album was released in April 1992. The material from this album was toured until autumn 1993. At that time, Bramhall II's drug use escalated and, as a result, the internal dispute. So it was agreed in October 1993 that it would be better to part. Several farewell concerts at the Backyard Outdoor Venue in Austin concluded the short chapter Arc Angels.

Shannon and Layton harmonized splendidly and went the further way together. Bramhall went into heroin withdrawal while Sexton continued his solo career. When Bramhall II started up again in 1998 under the name Mighty Zor, he brought the Shannon / Layton team back. Sexton played a couple of times in Southern gigs and so it was an unofficial reunion . Between 2002 and 2009 this constellation came up again and again. In 2009 it was time to officially revive the band, but Shannon had other plans for himself. A live double CD from a concert from March 2005 was released with three new studio pieces, accompanied by Dave Monsey on bass, as well as an accompanying DVD . Mark Newmark appeared in the live cast.

style

The Metal Hammer classified the debut album as southern rock . In addition to the similarities with the respective ex-bands of the musicians, there would be "the blazing fire of the Black Crowes and the dignified maturity of the Allman Brothers ". In MetalStar particular was Shape I'm In highlighted as " Rock'n'Roller was called" and by George Thorogood would sound. In addition, other songs were given the style descriptions " Boogie ", " Half Ballad " and " Country Rock ". Shortly after the record was put on, one would “involuntarily be reminded of Bad Company bands and early Foreigners ”. Despite " acoustic guitar- led" songs, there is "no real Schnulze ". The Musikexpress classified the album as "blues rock with occasional melodies from pop and funk ". The Internet platform Allmusic said that the album carried the blues rock spirit of Vaughan like no other. No less than four pieces, including Sent by Angels , dedicated to the deceased , let this be felt without a hint of pure imitation. The interaction of the two singers and lead guitarists also reminds one of other great artists from Texas: ZZ Top . Rocktimes.de wrote about the live album that blues rock was on offer, but "the opulent, almost wild excursions into the field of psychedelics " were not missing either .
