Badge is a rock song by George Harrison and Eric Clapton , first performed by British rock group Cream and released in 1969.

History of origin and characteristics

The lyrics are a reflection of a failed relationship and are sometimes a bit cryptic. Initially, the song Badge, recorded in October 1968, had no title. During the production of the Goodybe album, the music paper on which the title was written was used as a scratch sheet for the album titles and liner notes . The only recognizable word on the paper for Eric Clapton was "Bridge", which the Bridge indicated on the sheet. However, Clapton read the word "Badge" aloud - the song was later named.

George Harrison remembered the naming in a slightly different way: “I helped Eric write Badge . We were both supposed to contribute a song to the Goodbye album, and Eric hadn't finished his yet. We both wrote the song in different places. When we met I was at the bridge of the piece. Eric read the note upside down and laughed himself to death: 'What is the badge please?' After Ringo came to us drunk, he contributed the line about the swans in the park. ”A common misconception is that the song title derives from the chords used in the piece, which is incorrect because the chord progression does not consist of the notes BADGE .

Clapton acted as lead singer and guitarist on the recording. Jack Bruce sang background vocals and played electric bass. Ginger Baker accompanied on drums. Felix Pappalardi worked as a pianist, and Harrison is represented as a rhythm guitarist under the pseudonym "L'Angelo Misterioso".

Commercial win

In the United States , the single reached number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 65 on the Cashbox Top Singles chart. Badge reached number 18 in the British Singles Chart of the Official Charts Company . In Malaysia , the title was number 1 on the RIM chart, with more than 12,900 units sold.
