For the first time I want a Little Girl in Vaudeville was Lester Allen. It became famous for the McKinney's Cotton Pickers record . The song was then often covered from the 1930s, u. a. by Benny Goodman (1958), Nat King Cole (1958), Louis Armstrong (1946) and several times by T-Bone Walker . Count Basie liked it so much that he recorded it 16 times between 1940 and 1972. The most famous versions come from Jimmy Witherspoon , Ray Charles , Big Joe Turner and Nat King Cole. Even Eric Clapton has the song in his repertoire and took him on his album Reptile on (2001). I Want a Little Girl was also starred in the musical film Jammin 'the Blues . According to Jazzstandards.com, the versions by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Buck Clayton , Tony Coe / Alan Barnes , Wild Bill Davis , Lou Donaldson , Ike Quebec , Stanley Turrentine and Lester Young / Kansas City Five (1938) are particularly noteworthy .
