Sunshine of Your Love is a rock song by the British rock band Cream . The piece was written by Eric Clapton , Jack Bruce and Pete Brown and was released in 1967 on the album Disraeli Gears . In January 1968 the title was released as a single.

Emergence

In January 1967 Bruce and Clapton attended a concert by The Jimi Hendrix Experience at London's Saville Theater. Impressed by this performance, Bruce composed the bass line of the song after he got home . Most of the text was later written by Brown. Bruce commented on the genesis of the song: “I took my double bass and played the bass line. Pete looked out the window as the sun was rising and wrote: 'It's getting near dawn and lights close their tired eyes ...' ". ("I picked up my double bass and played the riff. Pete looked out the window and the sun was coming up. He wrote 'It's getting near dawn and lights close their tired eyes ...'"). The chorus Sunshine of your Love , after which the song was named, was written by Clapton.

Clapton used a Gibson SG from 1964 (his so-called "The Fool Guitar") as well as a Marshall amplifier and a wah-wah effects device on the recording . The song was recorded in May 1967 at Atlantic Studios in New York City . The producer of the recording was Felix Pappalardi .

Cream's then American record company Atlantic Records initially did not want to release the track because the label was dissatisfied with the song and the recording. Only after the influence of Booker T. Jones did the label agree to the publication.

In the television series Freaks and Geeks , the song is recorded in the episode I'm with the Band . The song's opening riff can be heard in the Futurama episode The 30% Iron Chef . In the first episode Millwall Brick of the second season of the series Lilyhammer , the song is played during the credits. The song is recorded in the Simpsons episode Mother Simpson when Mona Simpson sees Joe Namath's long hair. In The Heart of Darkness , the Wonder Years episode , Gary plays the song on his portable stereo while the boys drink and smoke beers around the campfire. A version of the song can be heard in the Family Guy episode Mr. Saturday Knight . 1

Movies and games

Sunshine of Your Love appeared on the soundtracks to 1983 films Uncommon Valor , 1990 Goodfellas , 1994 True Lies, and the 2003 film School of Rock soundtrack . The song was also used in the 2005 Johnny Knoxville film The Ringer . 1 The song is a replayable title in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock . 1

Cover versions

Eric Clapton

Clapton has released four live performances as a solo artist so far. In 1991 the first version appeared on the album 24 Nights . With the release on November 5, 2002, another interpretation of the title appeared on the album One More Car, One More Rider . In 2013, Clapton played the piece during the 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival . The song was also part of the setlist during the Journeyman World Tour in 1990 and 1991. The song also appeared on numerous compilation albums such as The History of Eric Clapton (March 1972), Backtrackin ' (May 1984), The Cream of Eric Clapton ( September 1987), Crossroads (April 1988), The Cream of Clapton (March 1995) and Complete Clapton (October 2007). He last played this song on May 3, 2005 in the Royal Albert Hall in London with the original line-up of Cream, which was then released on CD and DVD under the title CREAM ROYAL ALBERT HALL.

Jack Bruce

On June 1, 1975 Bruce played the song at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester and released the recording on the live album Live '75 . Another interpretation appeared in 1993 on the album Cities of the Heart . On this recording, Bruce played the piece on his 50th birthday. Another version was recorded in 1997 and 1998 with Peter Frampton and Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. Bruce and Clapton recorded the track for Bruce's album Shadows in the Air .

Jimi Hendrix released two cover versions of the song. In 2010 a six-minute version appeared on the album Valleys of Neptune and a year later a seven-minute interpretation on Winterland . Jackie DeShannon covered the song with Barry White on the Laurel Canyon album in 1968 . In the same year Ella Fitzgerald recorded the song. Bobby McFerrin released a vocal instrumental on the album Simple Pleasures in 1988 . Frank Zappa changed the lyrics of the song and recorded a cover for The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life . In 2004 Living Color recorded their version for the soundtrack of True Lies . For his 2005 released album Under Cover coverte Ozzy Osbourne the title. Elvis Costello and The Police played the song for the show Spectacle: Elvis Costello with .... one. In 2010 a cover by Carlos Santana appeared on his album Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time . Rob Thomas , lead singer of matchbox twenty, sang on the recording. The music website Allmusic lists a total of over 60 other releases of the song.

reception

Allmusic critic Richie Unterberger describes the song as the ultimate example of the amalgamation of hard rock, pop music and psychedelic rock. On Clapton's guitar riff, he notes that the riff is abrasive and memorable. Bruce's singing is filled with fear without appearing arrogant. Unterberger described the guitar solo played by Clapton as grim, psychedelic and bluesy.

Awards and honors

In 2004, the music magazine Rolling Stone listed the title at number 65 of the 500 best songs of all time . In March 2005, the song was voted number 19 of the 100 best guitar pieces by Q magazine . In 2009, VH1 placed Sunshine of Your Love at # 44 of the best hard rock songs of all time. The piece can be found on the list of the 500 songs that made rock 'n' roll compiled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . In the US, the single sold more than 500,000 times and was awarded a gold record by the RIAA .

Chart placements

The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968 . In the United Kingdom, the single was number 25. In Canada , the release was number three on the RPM top singles charts. In Australia and the Netherlands , the piece was 22nd and 27th. At the end of the year, the single was sixth on the Billboard Hot 100 and 21st on the Canadian singles charts.
