Disraeli Gears is the second studio album by the British blues - rock band Cream and released in November 1967 on the labels Polydor and Atco Records . There are influences of American psychedelic rock on the album .

Disraeli Gears was number 5 on the UK album charts and in the United States it even reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 , making for the trio's breakthrough there. The tracks Sunshine of Your Love and Strange Brew were released as singles. They make it clear that the supergroup had developed from the blues-influenced sound of the previous album to more psychedelic sounds.

The cover of Disraeli Gears was designed by Martin Sharp , an Australian cartoonist, songwriter and filmmaker. It was also he who gave the song Tales of Brave Ulysses its textual garb. In this song, among other things, Eric Clapton used the wah-wah pedal for the first time (before Jimi Hendrix ).

The album title "Disraeli Gears" is based on a joking mixture of the words "Derailleur gears" (derailleur gears on bicycles) and "Disraeli" (British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli ).

The US edition of Rolling Stone chose the album at number 114 in its list of the 500 best albums of all time .

In 1999, Disraeli Gears was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame .
