The 1994 and 1995 renovations of the Seattle Center Coliseum cost the city of Seattle $ 74.5 million and the Seattle SuperSonics about $ 21 million. During the renovation, the SuperSonics played at the Tacoma Dome and the Seattle Thunderbirds ( WHL ) played at the Kent Events Center . When KeyBank secured the naming rights for the Seattle Center Coliseum , the venue was renamed KeyArena . The operator was the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). After the winning design was chosen in June 2017, the Seattle City Council approved the contract with the Oak View Group (OVG) for the renovation of the Keyarena in September of that year. The renovations could start in October 2018 and should be completed after two years. The cost of the construction, which is to be financed privately, is expected to amount to around 500 million euros (approx. 600 million US dollars). The total area of the complex is to increase to 61,316  . For this purpose, u. a the floor is lowered by 4.5 meters. A new upper tier is also planned in the plans. The renovation is trying to get a professional NHL or NBA team into town.

On September 24, 2018, Seattle City Council approved the Oak View Group's 39-year private funding model to which u. a. Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and billionaire David Bonderman heard unanimously to modernize the hall. This allows the group of investors to tear down the old KeyArena and build a new multi-purpose arena. The demolition may only take place after a firm approval from the National Hockey League. The model also provides for compensation payments for resident companies (EUR 8.5 million) and measures to improve the traffic situation (EUR 34 million). Another NBA team is also being planned to move to Seattle after the SuperSonics was relocated to Oklahoma City. As early as February 2018, the city submitted an application to the NHL to become the league's 32nd  franchise .

The decision on inclusion was made in December of that year. The Executive Committee of the NHL has unanimously proposed the admission of Seattle to the Board of Governors (BOG), made up of representatives from the 31 NHL clubs. As part of the next BOG meeting on December 3rd and 4th, 2018, the new team, to be named at that time, was officially accepted into the league. It should start playing in the 2021/22 season . In July 2020, the name Seattle Kraken was officially announced.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction work took place in December 2018 . The plans envisaged the opening for the beginning of 2021. This date had to be postponed to June 1st of the year at the earliest. 17,400 places should be available for ice hockey games. For the basketball games of the Seattle Storm there should be 18,600 places. The construction costs are said to have increased to about 900 million US dollars.

In September 2019, only the roof of the old KeyArena was left that is to be retained for the new building. The windows and stands have been removed. The construction is enthroned on a large beam in the middle. Another 70 beams support the roof, which weighs 22,000 tons. 120 workers are currently working on the construction site, this number is said to have increased to 1,000 in about a year. In June of that year, Symetra , an insurance company , became the arena’s first founding partner and sponsor. The hall should be ready in 2021. An exact date will be announced in spring 2020.

The opening of the new arena, which is planned for June 1, 2021, will be postponed by a few months from August to mid-September of the year. The delay was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic .

In June 2020 the online mail order company Amazon became the arena's name sponsor . Oak View Group, NHL Seattle and Amazon have partnered. The KeyArena now bears the name Climate Pledge Arena ( German  climate promise arena ). It was announced that the rebuilt hall the world's first CO 2 will be low-carbon multi-purpose hall. It is to be operated with renewable energies such as solar energy , partly generated on site. In daily operation, only electricity is used in the arena, without fossil fuels . The first fully electric dehumidification systems are installed in the NHL. For the first time, single-use plastics have been banned and there has been a commitment to functional zero waste. There will be no rubbish bins, only compost and recycling bins. The CO 2 emissions of all events and the associated transport by fans, sports teams and entertainers should be fully offset and enable climate-neutral operation. The ice surface will consist of rainwater and refrigerant without greenhouse gases . The ice resurfacing machine is driven by an electric motor. The goal is the Zero Carbon Certification of the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). The Climate Pledge Arena would be the first event hall to receive this award.
