The Women's Flat Track Derby Association ( WFTDA for short ) is an international sports association for female roller derby clubs and leagues. The association is registered as a nonprofit organization in Raleigh , North Carolina . According to its statutes, the WFTDA promotes "the sport of women's flat-track roller derby by supporting the development of athleticism, sporting spirit and benevolence of its member clubs" and its motto is "by the skaters for the skaters". The prerequisite for membership is that every member organization, regardless of its legal form or structure, is mostly under the direction and owned by female athletes.

history

The organization was founded in 2004 as the United Leagues Council (ULC). In 2005, twenty flat track roller derby leagues came together for the first ULC meeting in Chicago to elaborate the principles, standards and goals of the sports association. By one of its resolutions, the ULC was renamed the Women's Flat Track Derby Association in November 2005 . In September 2007 the WFTDA became a member of the USA Roller Sports (USARS) umbrella organization and sent delegates to the USARS Board of Directors. Since 2008 the WFTDA has given its members access to accident and liability insurance.

In 2009, Montreal Roller Derby from Canada became the first roller derby league outside the USA to become a full member of the WFTDA, and in 2012, Bear City Roller Derby from Berlin became the first continental European league to become a full member.

Members

The current 369 full members of the association (as of May 2016) are in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, Canada, Colombia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Spain, Sweden , South Africa and the USA.

Regions

Initially, the WFTDA had only US members, which were divided into the two regions East and West (with a dividing line on the Mississippi River ). In 2009, the rapidly growing and now internationally active association switched operations to four regions that are open to clubs and leagues from all over the world. In 2015 they were distributed as follows:

  • East - eastern states of the USA , eastern provinces of Canada , Europe
  • North Central - northern states of the USA and the Canadian province of Ontario
  • South Central - southern states of the USA and Colombia
  • Western - Western US states, Western Canada provinces, Australia, and Japan

Divisions

WFTDA members are ranked nine times a year in order to finally divide them into divisions ( game classes ). You must play at least three official matches against opponents of equal value per year in order to appear in the annual ranking at the end of a competitive season. The 40 best clubs / leagues play in Division 1 (D1), the next best 60 in Division 2 (D2) and all others in Division 3 (D3).

In 2015, in addition to 35 US teams, three Canadian, one English and one Australian teams play in D1.

Play-off tournaments and championship

Play- off tournaments are held in the four regions in autumn . The WFTDA members must have played at least three official games against equal opponents in the previous months of the year and have met their other game requirements in order to be on the tournament list. The teams from D1 and D2 compete in separate eliminations. The three strongest teams are determined from the ten best teams in each region (and division). They then compete against the winners of the other three regions in the WFTDA Championship tournament to determine the best team in the association (world champions).
