Travelin 'Alone is a blues track composed by the American blues musician Melvin "Lil' Son" Jackson (1910–1976). Jackson's interpretation of the title was published in 1951 by Imperial Records and later published in the EMI Unart Catalog . The title became known to a wider audience through the cover version by Eric Clapton .

Original recording and publication

When Jackson, who had an R&B hit with the Freedom Train Blues in 1948 , left his old record company Gold Star in 1950 , he received an inquiry from the Californian music label Imperial Records . In the summer he took on major R&B titles such as Ticket Agent Blues and True Love Blues . On December 16 of the same year he recorded his song Travelin 'Alone for Imperial Records in Houston . This recording was released a little later in 1951 on Imperial # 5125. The original version was republished on collections of Jackson's works in both 1995 and 2006 .

Cover version

The British rock musician Eric Clapton interpreted the song in the Nippon Budōkan back in 2009 when he performed it with acoustic guitar . For his studio album Clapton , released on September 27, 2010 , he interpreted the song with the electric guitar . Commenting on the release of his version, Clapton stated, “I've always liked Lil 'Son Jackson, but never thought he'd written such a track. The song is so melodic, I felt like I really had to record the title. He [the title] is so strange; it never let go of me ”. On his recording, which has a playing time of 3 minutes and 56 seconds, in addition to Clapton as singer and guitarist , Willie Weeks as bassist , Jim Keltner as drummer , Doyle Bramhall II as rhythm guitarist and Walt Richmond on the Hammond organ . Music journalist Rick Moore described Clapton's interpretation as a "great, veiled blues number with a memorable melody". To introduce his album, he played the track live on Later with Jools Holland , using his replica of the Gibson “Beano” Les Paul .
