The Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center (or Dean Smith Center and Dean Dome ) is a multi-purpose hall in Chapel Hill , North Carolina .
History and use
The arena can seat 21,750 people and was built by Paul Howard Construction and Geiger Engineers from April 17, 1982 until it opened on January 18, 1986. Corley Redfoot Architects, Inc. designed the building. It is named after the basketball coach Dean Smith and was expanded in 1992 and 2000. It is primarily used for basketball competitions and is the hometown of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball . In addition to sporting events, concerts by international music greats such as Eric Clapton ( 1990 , 1992 ), Phil Collins , Janet Jackson and REM have taken place in the hall.
