history

CJ was founded as Cheil Jedang Co., Ltd in August 1953, just after the Korean War. Cheil Jedang was one of the first manufacturing companies in the Samsung group. Lee Byung-chull , the founder of Samsung, started out as a grocer. Cheil Jedang was the first company in South Korea to produce sugar on an industrial scale. In 1964, the production of pure sodium glutamate (a flavor enhancer) followed, which bore the trade name Mipung.

Cheil Jedang built more food factories and food research facilities. The company also got into the manufacture of pet food, ready meals and food additives. A well-known branded product in South Korea is Dasida (comparable to Maggi Fix in this country).

The company expanded to include the manufacture of amino acids and pharmaceutical products (e.g. Hepaxin-B, a hepatitis vaccine). In the late 1980s, the company began setting up production facilities abroad (Indonesia).

In 1991, Cheil Jedang was one of the first food manufacturers in South Korea to break the trillion won sales mark. In 1994 the company entered the film business by joining DreamWorks SKG and securing distribution rights for the Dreamworks productions in Asia (excluding Japan). The company also got into cosmetics production and the fast-food restaurant business. In 1997, Cheil Jedang became completely independent from the Samsung Group.

Various restructurings followed in the CJ group. The entertainment division (CJ Entertainment), restaurant chains (CJ Foodville) and the cosmetics division (CJ Enprani) were spun off. In addition, internationalization followed, especially on the Asian market. In October 2002, CheilJedang Co., Ltd. was established. in CJ Co., Ltd. renamed.

The CJ Group continues to expand its business nationally and internationally. In 2013 the group achieved sales of over 18 trillion won.

The fast food chain McDonald’s wants to get rid of its branches in South Korea. The CJ group, along with some financial investors and the local KG group, is one of the bidders.
