CGV is the largest cinema operator in South Korea and belongs to the CJ conglomerate . CJ CGV is the market leader in South Korea, Vietnam and Turkey . The chain also operates multiplex cinemas in China , Indonesia , Myanmar and the USA .
Initially, the abbreviation CGV stood for CJ Golden Village. CGV is now used without any further meaning. In 1998, CJ opened South Korea's first multiplex cinema with the CGV in Gangbyeon. In 2013, CGV achieved 100 million viewers in one country for the first time in one year, making it the fifth cinema chain in the world to achieve this milestone; to Regal , AMC Theaters and Cinemark in the USA and Cinépolis in Mexico .
Globally, CGV is best known for innovations, especially 4DX and ScreenX.
