Yongsan-gu (or Yongsan for short ) is a district in central Seoul . The name 龍山 Yongsan means 'Dragon Mountain'.

location

The neighboring districts are Mapo-gu in the west, Jung-gu in the north and Seongdong-gu in the east. In the south, Yongsan is bounded by the Han-gang , on whose other bank the districts of Yeongdeungpo-gu , Dongjak-gu , Seocho-gu and Gangnam-gu join. An expressway runs along the north bank of the Han-Gang, which takes up a large part of the individual traffic. The southern part of the Namsan also belongs to Yongsan.

Attractions

The United States Army maintains a large military base in Yongsan. However, there are plans to move them from Seoul. Not least because of the large number of US soldiers, Yongsan is the most foreign-dominated district in Seoul, which is particularly true of the Itaewon district , which was formerly a red light district and still plays a role as a entertainment and foreigner district. The largest mosque in Korea is also located here. Along the main street in this part of the city there are many inexpensive shops selling leather goods or men's and women's tailors selling made-to-measure clothes. Although homosexuality is still not openly lived in Korea, there is a part of Itaewon that has several bars and clubs for homosexuals. This part is also known as "Gay Hill" (English; in German: "Schwuler Hügel"). In this area you can also meet transsexuals who appear in groups. Up until a few years ago, male Koreans were not welcome in some bars and only US soldiers and Korean women were allowed to visit the locality.

The Yongsan electronics market is arguably one of the largest electronics centers. It is located near Yongsan Railway Station, where the KTX and other southbound trains also depart. Everything that has to do with electronics is available in this market. You can buy everything from computers to household items and hi-fi systems to radio systems. The prices for consumer electronics products are, however, relatively high compared to European prices, as exports abroad are thus cross-subsidized.

The Korean War Memorial is located in Yongsan-gu.

Almost all foreign embassies in South Korea are in Yongsan-gu, including the Swiss embassy.
