Mapo-gu is a municipality of Seoul . Mapo District was established in November 1944 from part of Seodaemoon-gu and Yongsan-gu.

location

Mapo-gu is north of the Han Gang . To the north is the Seoul World Cup Stadium , which opened in November 2001. To the south it is demarcated from the Yongsan-gu ( 용산구 ) district. In the west it borders just on Jung-gu (중구), then Seodaemun-gu ( 서대문구 ) and to the north of it comes Eunpyeong-gu ( 은평구 ). In Mapo-gu there are many residential buildings and, above all, larger universities, which shape the picture. The Sogang University and Hongik University are located in Mapo-gu, during which Yonsei University and Ewha University in neighboring Seodaemun-gu are. The district is also known for having K-pop labels like YG Entertainment based here.

administration

The Mapo-gu has been headed by Mayor Bak Hong-seop since 2010. Around 400,000 people live in this district. The administration is divided into 5 departments. The main office is near Mapo-gu-Cheong ( 마포구 청 ) Subway Station .

Hongdae-ap

Street in Hongdae

Hongdae-ap ( 홍대 압 ) is an abbreviated name for a neighborhood directly west of Hongik University, Hongik Daehakgyo ( 홍익 대학교 ), which is known as a student area for its nightlife. There are many discos, bars and restaurants here. Foreign students make the area comparatively international.

As Hongik University is known for its artistic program, there are many shops in this area that cater to the needs of the many artists. Hongdae is also considered a musical creative district.

Subdivision

Mapo-gu was formed in 1944 from parts of Seodaemun and Yongsan districts. The dong structure (smaller districts within Mapo-gus) was revised in 1985 and the last time in 2008. The latter revision has merged some smaller districts into one large district. As a result, the effective number of districts was reduced from 24 to 16. However, the revision did not change the address system. For example, let's say you live in the Changjeon District. This district has now been merged with the Seogang district. However, the name of the district is still kept in her address book as Changjeon District.

These are the 16 revised administrative districts:
