Korea Telecom ( KT ) is a South Korean company with headquarters in Seongnam near Seoul . The company operates in the telecommunications industry. KT has around 23,500 employees (as of 2015). The company was founded in 1981 as a public utility company and was subordinate to the state. Privatization began in 2001 and was completed in 2002.

Korea Telecom is a so-called chaebol , a conglomerate with Korean characteristics. The company operates in various sectors. In 2011, KT took over the payment card service provider BC Card.

In 2011, KT established the Olleh word mark, which is used, among other things, for landline and mobile communications, as well as for the Olleh TV streaming service. Since 2017, however, Olleh has been increasingly replaced by the KT brand.

Korea Telecom was the first company in the world to introduce the 5G communications standard . Both SK Telecom and KT started their G5 networks at the same time on April 4, 2019. The American company Verizon followed shortly afterwards . KT is also active in the field of artificial intelligence .

With KT SkyLife, KT has a subsidiary for television, which in turn operates the anime channel Animax in South Korea as a joint venture with Sony Pictures Television.

KT has several sports teams, including the KT Shooting Team in sports shooting , which is considered the best team in South Korea. The company supports KT Wiz in baseball and KT Sonicboom in basketball Busan. In e-sports the company is represented by KT Rolster.
