The Viejas Arena , officially called the Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl , is a sports hall on the campus of San Diego State University in San Diego , California ( USA ). It serves as the venue for the university's basketball teams and, depending on the event, offers space for over 12,000 people. In addition to basketball games, concerts or lectures are also held in the arena.

history

Construction of the arena began in 1995, was inaugurated in 1997 and has since served the basketball teams of the San Diego State Aztecs , as the university's sports teams call themselves, as the venue for basketball games. The arena was built in the middle of the old Aztec Bowl football stadium , comparable to the "new" central stadium that was built into the "old" one . After construction, the arena was called Cox Arena , named after the television company Cox Communications . When the contract expired in 2009, the arena was given its current name, which is derived from Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians , a federally organized tribe of Kumeyaay Indians who have lived in the areas in and around San Diego for over 10,000 years. This contract brings the university six million US dollars in ten years.

In 1998 the WCW tournament Bash at the Beach was held in the arena . In 2001 and 2006, the arena hosted the first two rounds of the national college basketball championship NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship . The 2006 tournament had to be interrupted and evacuated when an explosives detection dog smelled the scents of potentially dangerous substances. However, the tournament was able to continue unharmed. In October 2013 the TNA wrestling event Bound for Glory took place here.

In addition, the arena is often used as a concert arena. Well-known bands and artists such as Drake , Green Day , Lady Gaga , Linkin Park , Metallica , One Direction , Prince and Rise Against have performed in recent years . The arena often serves as an alternative to the Valley View Casino Center, which is a few kilometers away . In 2012, Tendzin Gyatsho , the 14th Dalai Lama , gave a lecture in the arena as part of his Compassion Without Borders program.
