Johann Michael Rummer
Johann Michael Rummer (born May 5, 1747 in Handschuhsheim ; † March 2, 1821 ) was a German artisan who made inlay work for various European rulers in David Roentgen's workshop in Neuwied .
Life
Rummer learned how to handle wood early on on his parents' farm. The Heidelberg church council Mieg recognized his talent and made it possible for him to train with the carpenter and cabinet maker Abraham Roentgen , where he learned for six years and became familiar with the art of inlay. He traveled to England to work with a cabinet maker named Gem and returned to Neuwied for a year. Prince Poninsky made it possible for him to come to Warsaw, where he stayed for a year. At that time he created valuable furniture for royal families and worked for the cabinet maker and cabinet maker Nieman [n].
In 1776 or 1777 he returned to Handschuhsheim, from where David Roentgen , the son of his teacher, called him to his workshop in Neuwied, whose main employee he became. Furniture from this workshop was sold to Goethe and the court of Louis XVI. delivered in Versailles and the Russian tsarist court. He was involved in the manufacture of a cabinet for Marie-Antoinette . On behalf of Archduke Karl von Lothringen , Rummer and Roentgen created the wall paneling in the castle in Brussels, which is considered the largest inlaid work in the world and is now kept in a Viennese museum. In 1786 Rummer settled in Schwetzingen . One of his sons continued his workshop. Rummer's work symbol was a glove symbolizing his hometown.
In Handschuhsheim the Rummer-Weg is named after him.
