The Movistar Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile , Región Metropolitana . It is located in Parque O'Higgins and has 12,000 seats. With standing room there are 16,000 visitors. It is used for sports , culture , trade fairs and leisure events. There is also an indoor swimming pool and tennis facility in the park, as well as the Fantasilandia amusement park .
history
The building was designed by Mario Recordón in 1956 as the Metropolitan Indoor Stadium and was intended to host the 1959 World Basketball Championship . The financial support for the project did not materialize, however, and went towards the renovation and expansion of the Estadio Nacional de Chile stadium , which was a venue for the 1962 World Cup . In 1998 Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle decided to complete the arena. The completion was supported by donations from the population and a loan of several million US dollars from Hiller Investments. The buyers of the covered stadium Peter Hiller and Michelle Bachelet opened the structure as Arena Santiago on April 15, 2006.
The Movistar Arena is a frequently used concert arena. Mainly South American artists and bands such as B. Ricardo Arjona , Luis Miguel , Chayanne , Américo , Daddy Yankee or Romeo Santos . But also internationally known musicians such as Stevie Wonder , Marc Anthony , the Scorpions , Europe , Julio Iglesias , Eric Clapton , André Rieu , Lana Del Rey , Iron Maiden , Sarah Brightman , Erykah Badu , Luis Fonsi , Whitesnake , Weezer , Lauryn Hill and Jason Mraz were already on the stage in the hall.
