The third World Basketball Championship of Men was held from 16 to 31 January 1959 in Chile instead. The tournament was organized by the World Basketball Federation (FIBA). 13 national teams competed against each other.

The Brazilian national basketball team became world champions for the first time. Vice world champions became the defending champions of 1954, the national basketball team of the United States . Third place went to the team from Chile .

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round four teams played against each other in three groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time.

Classification round

The classification round was held from January 21 to 23, 1959 in Valparaíso and Santiago de Chile . After the preliminary round, the third and fourth placed in each preliminary group played in the classification round first in one of two groups against two new opponents. Then the first two of the group played for 8th place, the second in the group for 10th place and the bottom of the group for 12th place.
