The St. Jakobshalle is a multi-purpose hall that was officially opened on September 26, 1976, but has been in use since 1975. It is located on the St. Jakob sports area in the Swiss municipality of Münchenstein , on the outskirts of Basel . The architect was Giovanni Panozzo.

division

The building has halls and rooms of different sizes, which are used for all kinds of occasions.

The large hall has an area of 2,800 m², a capacity of 9,000 seats and is an arena with an extremely multifunctional character. A rock concert can be transformed into a forum for general meetings of large companies, a large trade fair for professionals, a huge backdrop for television shows like Wetten, dass ..? , a center court for international tennis tournaments such as the ATP Basel , an opera stage, a sports arena for world championships or a riding piste for Lipizzaner stallions.

The small hall with an area of 1,050 m² enables all kinds of sporting events to be held as well as social events. This hall has a capacity of 1,500 seats.

The hall 2 m² with an area of 1,782 is almost identical to the Small Hall , just a bit bigger.

The foyer with a gross area of 3,500 m² serves on the one hand as an entrance area for the Great Hall, on the other hand as a multifunctional space for larger exhibitions. On the ground floor there are two more rooms as additional infrastructure for the needs of large events.

The Basel and Liestal rooms each have an area of 350 m² and a capacity of 350 people each. They can also be used together as they are separated by a sliding wall.

There are also meeting rooms and an auditorium with the appropriate infrastructure and equipment. Three gyms, a gymnastics hall and a swimming pool with a 25 m swimming pool are part of the equipment, whereby the other halls can also be used for sports events.

In January 2015, the Great Council of Basel-Stadt approved a loan of CHF 105 million for the renovation and modernization of the hall with 89 votes in favor and one abstention . A new building would have been twice as expensive as the renovation. The capacity will increase to 12,000 places. The St. Jakobshalle does not have to be expanded for this. The gain of 3,000 places results from the improvements in fire protection and escape routes , which were only achieved when the construction project was being drawn up. The construction work is to be completed in three stages by autumn 2018. The modernization and increase in capacity of the more than forty-year-old hall should make it more attractive again for major events such as concerts or sports competitions.

Events

In addition to sports, concerts, shows and similar events take place in the hall.

  • 12 issues of " Wetten, dass ..? "
  • Sonic, Switzerland Biggest Dance Festival
