The Stadionul Iolanda Balaș Soter is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Romanian capital Bucharest .

history

The venue was rebuilt and completely overhauled from January 13th, 2002 until 2003. The new stadium opened on April 14, 2003. It was named after the high jumper Iolanda Balaș, who was born, active and deceased in the country . The structure has a maximum audience capacity of 28,000 people. The stadium is also often referred to as the rugby park .

The venue suffered from financial difficulties from 2006 to 2009, because until 2009 only sports events in the disciplines of soccer , athletics and American football were allowed. From 2010 the operators of the stadium decided to have concerts of both national and international artists on the site. This saved the Stadionul Iolanda Balaș Soter from ruin.

British rock musician Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood held one of the first concerts by an international artist in the stadium. The two musicians performed on June 11, 2010 in the sold-out stadium in front of 26,734 spectators. Even Leonard Cohen and placebo performed here already.
