The Recording Industry Association of Japan ( Japanese 一般 社 団 法人 日本 レ コ ー ド 協会 , ippan shadan hōjin Nihon Rekōdo Kyōkai , "regular legal entity Japanese record company"), RIAJ for short, is a Japanese organization founded in April 1942, which all major music companies and record companies Japan, comparable to the American RIAA . Limits to the award of phonograms

The RIAJ officially awards the Music Sales and Use Awards for all audio and video recordings released after January 21, 1989. At the beginning, the awards were given for albums and singles with separate award limits. The albums and singles were again differentiated into foreign and domestic editions. There was only one gold, platinum and diamond award. The diamond record is also known as a million in Japan . On July 1, 2003, there was a major reform in which uniform lending limits were set for all audio and video recordings. Double and multiple platinum awards have also been added. With the "7 million" the album First Love by Hikaru Utada most successful Japanese CD release of all time.

Gold Disc Awards

Since March 1987 the RIAJ has organized the Japan Gold Disc Awards ( Japanese 日本 ゴ ー ル ド デ ィ ス ク 大 賞 , Nihon Gōrudo Disuku Taishō ), one of the largest and most important Japanese music awards. The prizes are usually awarded in spring and always based on the sales figures of the individual artists. In addition, the RIAJ awards the gold, platinum and million awards in the form of refined records in the ceremony.
