Third Degree is a blues title written by Eddie Boyd and Willie Dixon . Boyd recorded third degree for Chess Records (# 1541); the B-side of the single, which appeared in 1953, contained the Boyd number Back Beat . The song became known to the general public in cover versions of Johnny Winter (album of the same name in 1986) and Eric Clapton for his studio album From the Cradle on September 13, 1994.

Clapton published his interpretation on the compilations Steppin 'Out from 1981 and Forever Man from 2015. His version also appeared on the unofficial publications Blues World of Eric Clapton from 1975, Unplugged / From the Cradle / Journeyman from 1994 and Put it Where You Want from 2011. Clapton played a version of the song for Pavarotti & Friends For War Child concert from 1996.
